A heart-rending scene occurred when the very emaciated dog became exhausted and could not bear it any longer. His frantic attempt to relax on his rags was prevented by the small chain tightly coiled around his neck, leaving his head hanging in a fixed rhombus.
Cala, the abused boy, had been hired as a guard dog by the mechanic in Saп José, Costa Rica. Unfortunately, her caregiver provided her with adequate care and sought veterinary care when she became ill.
Cala’s health gradually deteriorated and holding his head high became a battle for every breath. As time ran out, worried neighbours interviewed, informed local authorities and contacted the humane staff of the Territorio de Zagυates, a well-known local sanctuary dedicated to the well-being of thousands of dogs.
Lya Battle, the creator of Territorio de Zagυates, was deeply saddened and angry at Cala’s plight. “The first photo I saw of her showed this lickable creature stripped of her dignity and ready to give up — a dog whose spirit had been broken and was just waiting for the end to come while living a nightmare without end,” Battle told The New York Times. Cala was quickly removed from her tormentor’s property by police and hospital staff who responded to her call for help. She was sent to a veterinarian, who treated her acute emaciation as well as injuries caused by the constriction of her neck. Cala subsequently found refuge in the Territorio de Zagυates, where she began her physical and mental recovery.
Cala had to endure tough procedures to repair her injuries, especially the cut inflicted by years of hanging from the metal chain around her neck. Despite the agony, Cala realized that love and rewards followed the agony, and she persevered through each stage of her rehabilitation.
Cala’s wariness toward her fellow dogs first led Battle to believe that she had never met other dogs or had been bred to view them as rivals. However, the wariness grew over time through her contacts with other dogs, as well as the loving people around her.
“We watched Cala go from being a weak, feeble animal, too depressed to care, to a strong creature willing to fight back,” Battle said. “We also saw that stubborn creature incorporate games and nonsense into her daily routine over time. We saw more of her personality emerge with each passing day. She went from being terrified of humans to trusting them and even ‘bothering’ them for attention.”
Cala’s travails, however, were far from over. In the aftermath, evil people invaded the sanctuary and poured out sausages, claiming the lives of 16 innocent dogs. Cala had accidentally eaten part of the sausages, but surprisingly survived.
“When we found her, Cala was still alive,” Battle said. “Maybe her size helped her tolerate the dose, or maybe she just took a small bite.” Cala had been rescued, though. She eventually struggled with psychological distress for a long time after that, but eventually recovered. She’s just too tough!”
Battle believes there are no coincidences in life. Cala’s survival, despite years of abandonment, abuse, hunger and illness, serves as proof of her unbreakable spirit. The humans reappeared, eager to endure grief, just as she discovered that life was worth the wait. While the funeral home mourned the loss of other beloved dogs, Cala’s remarkable survival reflected her tenacity.
Cala, who is now a foster parent, delights in the amount of love and care lavished on her. Despite years of abuse, torture and imprisonment, Cala is gradually letting go of her past and embracing her mischievous tendencies, a development that her foster mother gladly accepts.
“After years of abandonment, torture and imprisonment, Cala seems to be going through the mischievous phase that puppies usually go through, and we all think that’s OK,” Battle said. “She’s happy, strong, stubborn, not very stubborn and spoiled by her foster mom and family.”
With every dog’s life saved and many more to come, Battle is Cala’s uniquely inspiring story. It depicts the epic battle between good and evil, hate and love, with love triumphing.
“This rescue is an inspiring story of love triumphing over adversity and serves as a reminder to give up,” Battle said. “It reinforces our resolve to fight the good fight for a little while longer.”
